We are delighted to announce that our charity of the year for 2020 is The Trussell Trust!
This fantastic charity support over 1,200 food banks across the UK with the aim to support the 14 million people in the UK who are living in poverty, 4.5 million of those are children - a heart-breaking statistic.
From April to September 2019 The Trussell Trust gave away 823,145 emergency packages the content of which is enough to last for 3 days. A third of which went to children, this was a 23% increase from the same period in 2018. The charity is under more pressure than ever so here at Solutions we want to do as much as we can to help relieve the pressure, not only will be donating money and food, we will also be donating our time by lending a helping hand volunteering at local food banks.
The Trussell Trust background.
Carol and Paddy Henderson founded the Trussell Trust in 1997 based on a legacy left by Carol’s mother, Betty Trussell.
The Trussell Trust’s initial Bulgaria project focused on improving conditions for the 60+ children sleeping rough at Central Railway Station in Bulgaria.
In 2000, Paddy received a call from a mother in Salisbury whose child was going hungry. That call resonated with the Henderson’s, and Paddy immediately investigated data on poverty and deprivation in the UK and found that significant numbers of people faced hunger as a result of a sudden crisis. Paddy started Salisbury Foodbank in his garden shed and garage, providing three days’ worth of emergency food to local people in crisis.
The Trussell Trust have worked with nutritionists to develop food parcels that contain sufficient nutrition for adults and children, proving at least three days’ worth of healthy, balanced meals for individuals and families.
Stages of donation
1 - FOOD IS DONATED
Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to a food bank. Large collections often take place as part of seasonal celebrations such as harvest and Christmas, and food is also collected at supermarkets.
2 - FOOD IS SORTED & STORED
Volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date and store it ready to be given to people who are referred to food banks in crisis. More than 40,000 people give up their time to volunteer at food banks across the UK.
3 - PROFESSIONALS IDENTIFY PEOPLE IN NEED
Food banks partner with a wide range of care professionals such as doctors, teachers, health visitors and social workers to identify people in crisis and give them a food bank voucher to access emergency food.
4 - CLIENTS RECEIVE FOOD
People bring their voucher to a food bank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers welcome people and offer them further emotional support to help resolve the crisis they face.
A word from the Chief Executive, Emma Revie: “As a nation we expect no one should be left hungry of destitute- illness, disability, family breakdown or the loss of a job could happen to any of us, and we owe it to each other to make sure sufficient financial support is in place when we need it most.“
At Solutions, we pick a different charity to support each year. Supporting charities is a big part of our ethos and ensure we have different activities to generate donations throughout the 12 months. Last year we worked with Mind, a charity that provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems across England and Wales. We raised an amazing £2,500…but this year, our goal is to beat it.
