Salesforce celebrate their 20th birthday!

On 8th March 2019, Salesforce celebrated their 20th birthday - a major milestone for this forward thinking, tech savvy business. Salesforce is the world's leading cloud-based CRM system, transforming businesses by giving them the ability to manage all their relationships with potential and existing clients. To celebrate their milestone, Salesforce hosted a 20th birthday concert which nearly 1,000 employees attended.

The Salesforce partner system is key to their success. Behind everything they do is a story of collaboration, opportunity and commitment. During the two decades of partnership, more than 2 million Trailhead badges have been earned, they have gained over 100,000 Partner Community members, and 5,000 solutions on AppExchange, a lot has been accomplished!

Salesforce has now exceeded $13 billion in revenue quicker than any other enterprise software company in history, helping 150,000 businesses put their customers at the heart of everything they do. 20 years on, Salesforce is still evolving their technology making the cloud. mobile, social and artificial intelligence available to companies worldwide, regardless of their size and scale.

The history of Salesforce...

1999 - 2000

Salesforce was born! In March 1999, Salesforce began in a small apartment in San Francisco, California by Marc Benioff, Parker Harris, Frank Dominguez and Dave Moellenhoff. Their idea was to create a completely unique business solution through a model called Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and started the mission by building a CRM system that was as easy for everyone to use as Amazon. Within a month of hard work and development, the first working prototype was born named Salesforce.com.

In July 1999, the team had a small office at the Rincon Centre with just 10 employees, yet by November 200 Salesforce had a great product, a large dedicated team and a new office ready for the product launch.

2000 - 2003

Salesforce was launched at the Regency theatre in 2000, and surprised its guests with a fantastic event. The event was based around an advertising campaign 'No Software' which featured Salesforce as advanced, revolutionary technology - not software!

In 2003, Salesforce launched their annual event - 'Dreamforce'. Dreamforce was a completely new event, held over a few days in San Francisco. With over 1,000 registered attendees with 52 presentations, Dreamforce was used to launch a product called Sforce 2.0 - the industry's first on-demand application service. Dreamforce is still going today as an annual event - but on a far larger scale with over 170,000 people attending!

2004 - 2006

In 2004, Salesforce created 'Salesforce Ohana', involving their employees and global community. Salesforce Ohana is like the family of the business, extending to everyone in their company ecosystem from employees, customers, partners and communities. To celebrate the creation of Salesforce Ohana, a Hawaiian themed launch party of Salesforce.com kicked off the celebrations.

2005 was the year AppExchange was born, a service that would change business software forever. The AppExchange as a success because it offered partners a platform to develop their own applications and open them up to all Salesforce customers.

At Dreamforce 2006, more than 5,000 members of the Salesforce community attended to hear about the latest innovations at Salesforce.com. Apex was released, an On-Demand Programming Language allowing third parties, for the first time, to write and run code on Salesforce.com's multi-tenant, shared architecture.

2013 - 2015

By 2013, over 55% of people across the world owed a smartphone, so Salesforce focused their efforts on mobile applications. Salesforce Mobile allowed access to a select amount of information from your phone. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough, so the Salesforce1 platform was launched.

Salesforce1 platform allowed users to access their favourite Salesforce Apps, custom applications and integrations, as well as AppExchange Apps that could be downloaded from the App Store. This was later changed to Lightning.

In 2015, Lightning was slowly rolled out to the community with an official launch at Dreamforce. The Lightning experience looked to change the way Salesforce.com looked through a browser forever. This unified the look and feel across Salesforce, no matter what device was being used.

2016 - Future

The most recent product, Einstein, was released in 2016. Einstein has been developed across all Salesforce products and allows customers to access the latest insights about their platform and customers. It delivers advanced AI capabilities to sales, service and marketing and even allows developers to build Apps using the Einstein engine. At Dreamforce 2016 in front of 170,000 people, Einstein was presented.

The future is bright for Salesforce, as the company continues to make a huge impact and monopolise the CRM market. We look forward to seeing what they accomplish in the next 20 years!
